Zenon-Media joined the Fraunhofer Institut of Erlangen to
launch for the NAB exhibition as a world innovation a surround 5.1
stream based on the MP3 SX technology. The stream is compatible with
all standard mp3 players and can be listened from everybody.
A WINAMP plug in is placed at the disposal by Fraunhofer (http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/fhg/iis/EN/bf/amm/mp3sur/index.jsp
) in order to be able to play the sound via WINAMP via a 5.1
surround loudspeaker unit. The Fraunhofer Plug-in is also able
to create a surround audio scenario in a headset thanks to
ENSONIDO technology (http://www.ensonido.com ).
The
broadcasting of the Webradio is done over the software solution ALL IN
AUDIO ONE of Zenon-Media which makes it possible to play the audio file
over 6 mono channels. The cross mixes between the audio files are done
on this surround playout like for stereo audio files. Each mono channel
is mixed to the apposite channel in the next song. The surround
encoding is done over “Broadcaster”, a shoutcast module of Fraunhofer
which will broadcast the stream in a very traditional way over a
shoutcast server.
Mp3 SX offers the advantage to be played and
read by standard stereo systems. A MP3SX file can be played in a
completely transparent way by all the mp3 players, only if the decoder
includes the SX technology the played sound can be listened as a
surround one.
In this case the data storage can be done for a
stereo and a surround broadcasting by the same process of encoding, it
is thus not necessary to store in two different formats the sounds for
their broadcasting.
A stereo or surround broadcasting will be
done from the same audio files stored on the server without thinking
about the encoding format.
Contrary to other encoding formats
in mp3 SX will not be an encoding of 6 mono channels as
multiplex(linear, compressed...) but MP3SX will include as metadata in
the stereo stream the surround information so the surround playout is
built by the player itself.
In this case the Zenon-Media player
will be configured in stereo or surround mode to have a stereophonic or
surround restitution. The choice of the restitution is made according
to the vectors of transmission.
Thanks to this technology it is very easy for a traditional Radio (http://www.radioclassique.fr
) to broadcast today in stereo on FM and surround for the theme stream
of the Web channels the same audio files stored on the main server.
